Title - Innovation on Display
Even if you have a great idea, its often hard to articulate it to others or even showcase it in a way that can draw others to your like-minded enthusiasm. It often takes more than a researcher or engineer to run a startup, but needs those who can communicate to the public and the world how an invention can improve the future. Since the early 2000s startups “Demo Days” have been an essential part of the startup ecosystem. Although the range in how they function, what they can consist of or how they are displayed. Demo Days are one of the best ways for researchers and startups to present their ideas to investors and start up accelerators to attract funds and guidance that every startup needs to advance. However beyond helping the startups themselves, Demo days have a wide range of benefits for many parties alike.
Many popular accelerators such as Y- Combinator, 500 Startups and TechStars have hosted and adapted Demo Days to fit the needs of those investing as well as the startups, but at their core there are main benefits that Demo Days offer. First and foremost is the platform for Startups to receive exposure and much needed feedback. Exposure is necessary as many Fortune 500 companies started out as a startup in a garage, that wasn’t known outside a handful of people. Even with social media, it’s hard for many startups to break out into the public eye, which is why many Demo days offer the much-needed media and social attention that can make it easier to connect with venture capitalists and industry experts. Along with exposure comes the feedback given by potential investors and even fellow entrepreneurs. Valuable feedback can help fix and weaknesses, dispel any concerns or improve business models and strategies. As innovation is in a constant flow, its natural that change and the opportunity to improve and receive feedback is one of the many benefits of Demo Days.
Startups are not alone, investors also can network to find the next big company or breakthrough which can spread throughout the global market, build partnerships and invigorate innovation. Listening to Demo Days also give a good chance for investors to gauge the market value of up incoming startups. Demo Days offer a huge opportunity which is hard to recreate; the benefits, support and quality of information that investors can receive. They also open doors to joint ventures, distribution agreements and collaborations. Working with these startups, investors can guide and refine the business model, find a better target market or communicate efficiently to the public.
Demo Days in short have become a necessary part of every startup’s journey to become successful and secure their innovation is something that can change people’s lives. The Foundation for Medical Innovation (FMI), like most accelerators is creating platforms where medical innovation can thrive due to these Demo Days. On Friday April 4th FMI held its 1st Startup Investing Forum, which allowed 9 different startups to present their newest medical innovations to those privileged to be in attendance. This Demo Day allowed entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and investors the chance to hear what future will be like for the Bio-medical field. The results are growing but as of now 3 of the presenting startups are going to have Demo Days with funding from FMI and FMI’s platforms. Thanks to Demo Days and FMI, innovation can remain on steady improvement for the betterment of people everywhere.
